8 Reasons Why You Should be Using Pinterest for Your Business

  • People go to Pinterest to decide what to buy and from where. In fact, around 2/3 of all pins are from businesses and Pinners seek out their favorite brands on Pinterest. Studies show 93% of Pinners use Pinterest for planning purchases, 87% of Pinners have purchased something because of Pinterest and 72% of Pinners access Pinterest to determine what to buy offline.

  • They are open to being marketed to, which is not the case on other social media channels.

  • Because Pinterest is more of a search engine for creative ideas, people use the search box feature a lot. This means that instead of a member of your target market missing your update completely, they can find your content within seconds by typing in a keyword. This makes it possible for your content to stay active and evergreen years after you pin it.

  • Pinners have higher household income than any other social media users. This is good to know since these people are primed and ready to buy. Approximately half of all Pinners earn at least $50K, while at least 10% of Pinners have a household budget of at least $125K.

  • The average sale from click-through on Pinterest is almost $59. This is higher than on any other social media channel.

  • You can easily market to your target audience for much smaller marketing budget because pinners use Pinterest more as a way to shop over the use of TV, catalogs or magazines. This could save you a lot of money.

  • With Pinterest’s unique Smart Feed, you can keep your finger on the pulse of all the new upcoming trends in your niche or industry. It can also show you what products are losing traction so you can change your product line to meet demand before the trend fully develops. This gives you a huge advantage over your competition.

  • Pinterest continues to grow in popularity. It’s here to stay, so it’s worth your time and effort to market there. It’s even becoming more and more popular with men and minorities.

  • Referral website traffic averages 5%, which is second only to Facebook. This makes sense when you think about the number of people who go to Pinterest to make purchasing decisions. They see your content and want to know more about your product line, so they head over to your website to browse.

Debunking Pinterest Misconceptions

It’s true that people who have never used a particular social media platform can easily buy into the myths surrounding them. Pinterest has its share of common conceptions also. But let’s take a look at some of the most common ones businesses might believe—either through misinformation or as a way to avoid adding another social media site to their marketing strategy.

Only middle aged women use Pinterest

Pinterest provides a creative outlet across a diverse population. It's not just for DIY’ers or crafters. It's utilized by 100 million active users per month—more than the population of middle-aged women. In fact, more men have started using Pinterest as a way to collect, organize and come up with new ideas for their projects too. A third of Millennials also use Pinterest, often as a way to plan their futures. And not just their weddings, but also career planning, entrepreneurial ideas and home decorating are just a few of the things young people pin about. Even Millennial males are joining Pinterest every day to plan and dream their futures. The visual format of Pinterest supplies all ages, genders, and races a place to dream, create and plan.

Hashtags are all the same

We’ve gotten so used to using hashtags on social media that we assume they work the same way on all of them. What works on Twitter or Instagram, however, doesn’t work the same way on Pinterest. Many people use Pinterest as their main form of social media and aren’t used to using hashtags, so they are of little benefit. Also, since Pinterest works as a search engine, hashtags are irrelevant. All you need to search is a good keyword—unlike on other social media platforms where a hashtag helps you locate trending global information. If you are building a connection with certain ages or savvy social media fans, a hashtag or two won’t hurt, but it’s recommended you create a hashtag using your brand name, not a topic or keyword. Otherwise, Pinterest recommends leaving them off altogether. Finally, Pinterest only allows you to use one hashtag per Promoted Pin, which says a great deal about how ineffective they are.

Using a social media schedule is cheating/inauthentic/boring

If you plan on doing all of your social media postings in real time, you'll get nothing else done. Since it’s recommended by most Pinterest marketing gurus that brands pin up to 30+ times per day, over the course of the day, you can see the ineffectiveness of this proposal. And, it’s simply not true. The Pinterest Smart Feed Algorithm gives no preferred treatment to real time posting. What is important though is the consistency and timing of your pins. Setting up a schedule that ensures you post on a consistent basis when most of your target market is on Pinterest is what will give you the marketing edge.
